Project: Terra Nova

More About This Project

The Terra Nova Oilfield located in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland was developed using a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility. The overall project was undertaken by an Alliance of companies within which the Ardersier yard formed a joint venture with PCL of Edmonton in Canada to build the topsides modules. The other major FPSO components included the Hull which was built by Daewoo in South Korea and the Turret which was designed by Sofec (Houston) and built in the UAE. A unique feature included in the design of the hull and turret components was the ability of the FPSO vessel to disconnect from the field in a very short time period in the event of icebergs threatening the facility.

The two structures built at the Yard were compression and separation modules with the main suppliers being Nuovo Pignone of Florence (Italy) providing the compressors and Motherwell Bridge providing the separators. The other topsides modules were built by PCL in Bull Arm Newfoundland where the installation of the modules onto the Hull was also carried out. A number of personnel from the yard were seconded to Newfoundland to assist in managing  the fabrication and installation of the modules at the Bull Arm yard.
